Standing in our circle
waiting for the bread and wine.
Trying to imagine
how it must have been that night.
Never seem to make it
to the place that I should be.
Then the vision dies
when a child’s eyes
come gazing up at me.

The grape was not intended
to replace the sacraments.
It’s meant for those whose parents chose
to await their evidence.
But no one told these children
how exclusive they should be.
So with hopeful eyes
they share their prize
with everyone they see.

The grape is freely offered up
to everyone they see.
I must admit I'm never sure
if this gift was meant for me.
“Who wouldn't want its sweetness?”
is the look that's in their eyes...
Wonder if that's just how Jesus feels
when he offers us His light.

There's been times when I refused it,
‘cause I thought it not my place.
Couldn't help but notice
disappointment on their face.
And if I'm not mistaken,
there is more than meets the eye.
But I can't restrain
the silly games
that play out in my mind.
